Meet Ms. Stopp
This is my ninth year at Winnona Park Elementary School. I have taught pre-K, first grade, served first and second graders and their teachers as a literacy specialist, and now I teach second grade.
I became a teacher because I always struggled with reading when I was a kid and wanted to help those that found learning to read frustrating too. I believe that teaching someone to read is one of the most powerful skills you can help someone learn. It is one of the greatest gifts because it is certain to impact the rest of your life!
I am so excited to have a crew of my own and be part of such an amazing community! I can't wait to get to know you and your families this year! Email: [email protected]

Decatur Education Foundation
in 2017, I was awarded with the DEF Volunteer of the Year award! It was such an awesome honor to to be celebrated among some of the community's volunteers who dedicate their time to our kids and their families to raise money for City Schools of Decatur.
Decatur Education Foundation (DEF) is an independent nonprofit that works in close partnership with City Schools of Decatur. Want to support or volunteer too? There are always plenty of opportunities to support with your time or donations. Some of my personal favorites are Supper & Sips, Eat & Greet, the Progressive Dinner, and of course the Pie in the Face for Tour deCatur!! Hope to see you at an event soon!

Georgia Breathes
Georgia Breathes - Deep Breath Initiative is a deep breath initiative for students to connect to their breath, to connect to each other and to connect their classrooms to other classrooms in Georgia through 4 breaths practiced for 4 minutes for 40 days. Students learn 4 breaths in 40 days, empowering them to break through negative blocks and create new habits. Each breath in this powerful sequence is accessible, easy-to-learn, and a non-confrontational tool for creating the mind-body connection.

Little Free Library
Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share with their neighbors.
Check out my Little Free Library, a gift from my 2012-2013 class, in front of Winnona Park Elementary School, 510 Avery St. Decatur, GA 30030.

Georgia SHAPE
Georgia SHAPE is an exciting initiative program to improve Georgia’s future, beginning with our young people. We know all children can benefit from knowledge of their current health-related fitness levels, along with a capacity to develop and implement strategies for personal improvement.
A few summers ago, Coach Beauchamp and I went to the Power Up for 30 training to help our school learn how to incorporate more movement and Brain Boosters in the regular school day! In our room, we'll use Yoga Pretzels, GoNoodle, Mind In Motion, JAM, Adventure to Fitness, Sitting Still Like a Frog, and many more to get our bodies moving, blood pumping, and brains ready to learn all day long!
Read the research about physical activity and academic achievement.

Girls On The Run
Over a period of 10-12 weeks, girls in the 3rd through 5th grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. GOTR lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. I have served for 5 years as a coach and I simply love the pride and confidence our runners have on their faces as they cross their 5k finish line! |
Milken Family Foundation
In November 2010, I was awarded with the Milken Educator Award. It's a national honor awarding about 50 of the nation's top teachers in every area K-12 and administrators too with $25,000! I flew out to Santa Monica, CA in April 2010 to participate in not only an amazing award ceremony, but a two day educator forum where teachers and principals from across the nation were able to share highlights from their schools. This was an incredible honor and I continue to make new MFF family and friends all the time.

Sunset Stories
The Milken Award gave me the funds to finally start Sunset Stories with two of my best teacher friends. We're a community literacy outreach program that provides free books, activities, and lessons to families in need. Once a month we meet in the clubhouse at the apartment complex that houses more than 70% of the students from a local Norcross, GA elementary school. We're always looking for readers, gently used books, and monetary donations to buy books and supplies for the kids.
2016 UPDATE: We've recently lost our reading space to remodeling and other community activities. With generous donations, we plan to construct a Free Little Library in the neighborhood so our families will never be too far from a good story!
