Norms for WP Parents Volunteering to Chaperone Fieldwork Experiences
Purpose of Fieldwork:
Winnona Park students learn from fieldwork and community experts in addition to learning at school. They use the natural and social environments of their communities as sites for purposeful learning. WP and Expeditionary Learning differentiates between traditional field trips, in which students are often spectators, and fieldwork, in which students are active investigators. [EL Core Practice 6, p23]
Purpose of Chaperones:
The primary purpose of a parent chaperone is to assist teachers in ensuring student safety and supporting student learning. [EL Core Practice 28, p68]
Purpose of Norms:
Norms in general help a group achieve its stated purpose. Norms clearly dictate the responsibilities and obligations of each member of a group, reducing ambiguity of expectations. Norms state “how” we will work together. [EL Core Practice 35, p79]
As a chaperone on a Winnona Park fieldwork experience I agree to:
- Ensure the safety and well being of the students entrusted to me.
- Point students to the learning. Actively facilitate learning within my group of students.
- Keep my group of students in close proximity to me at all times.
- Leave younger siblings at home (with a baby sitter).
- Remind students of expectations. Alert a teacher/staff member if a student is not following directions.
- Use cell phones only in the case of an EMERGENCY.
The Winnona Park School phone # is: 404.370.4490.
- Refrain from purchasing food or souvenirs for students and adults, before, during or after the field-work experience.
- Have the same expectations for my own child as I would others and follow through with teacher directions, even with my own child.
